The process of mummification was both an art and a science in which the body of the deceased was prepared during a complete cycle of the moon (approximately 72 days). During this time the body was ritually washed and purified with natron salts, oils and herbs before it was wrapped and bound in linen. Amulets were placed on the body and incantations were recited for protection. Anpu (Anubis) was the guide for all souls on this all- important journey into the afterlife. One of ancient Egypt's greatest monuments was Heru em AaKhuti (Sphinx) which roughly translated means "Heru (Horus) of the horizon." Century after century his fixed gaze watches in silent vigil. When it was first constructed remains a mystery. The association with Heru indicates a relation to the Pharaoh, as Heru was representative of the living Pharaoh. Originally thought to have a false beard, as well as the "Nemes" headdress specific to the phaoronic offiice, also leads to it being a symbolic representation of the Phaorah as a divine ruler.
