Nubian BeadsTM
For centuries Africans have adorned their bodies with colorful beads. During ancient periods wooden or ceramic beads were fashioned by hand, then glazed and fired with colorful dyes. Semiprecious stones such as Lapis lazuli, carnelian, and turquoise were painstakingly fashioned into beads. With the invention of glass, the ancient Egyptians made beads that imitated semiprecious stones. African beadwork, from the Zulu of southern Africa to the Egyptians of northern Africa, were designed by skilled artisans who carefully created patterns with symbolic messages that served ritualistic purposes. Eventually the art of beadwork spread throughout Europe via the Greek and Roman contact with Africa., particularly with Egypt. It is now found in modern Western fashion accessories. Today the production of Nubian BeadsTM is a cottage industry in Upper Egypt. Handmade with colorful glass rocaille beads from Czechoslovakia, each neckpiece adds colorful fashion accents to casual and formal attire alike.
The possibilities are limited only by the imagination.
